Help - update bricked S20
Hi all,
I was running ESP_Easy_v2.0-20180313_normal_ESP8266_1024 on Sonoff S20 for several weeks.
Today I tried to update via the GUI/OTA to ESP_Easy_mega-20180403_normal_ESP8266_1024.
The update failed with error message. After that the S20 was dead.
Tried to flash using the USB adapter, but it is not possible.
LEDs on S20 are off.
Any idea how to fix this?
thx

Re: Help - update bricked S20
thx, but where do I find 'my Flasher'?
not sure if I need it, as flashing was successfull, according to the normal flashing tool.
but S20 does not work after flashing. tried ESP_Easy_mega-20180403_normal_ESP8266_1024 and ESP_Easy_v2.0-20180313_normal_ESP8266_1024.

Re: Help - update bricked S20
Do you see your S20 in the Wifi environment? If not, download the R148 firmware. I've had the same problem and the R148 fix it.

Re: Help - update bricked S20
thx, so it is 'ESP Easy Flasher' and not 'My Flasher'.... lol
just found this:
I assume this caused the problem. There should be a check in the OTA update to prevent this situation.
just found this:
https://www.letscontrolit.com/wiki/index.php/ESPEasy2.0+ firmware on 1MB modules - Warning
If you are running the stock Mega edition firmware on 1MB modules, you will find that you can no longer load newer images because there's insufficient free space to upload the image (344kB as of 2.0.0.-Dev 9 edition). You can compile smaller images to solve this issue or use a small image that has been build just to upload newer images. So you would always have to use a two-step process to renew using OTA on 1MB modules. Using the uploader image as an in-between step, you can use images up to 604kB.
Only devices with 1Mb or more flash are supported.
To use OTA you need more then 1Mb of flash. (otherwise your device will get unreachable via wireless and you need to fix it via serial)
You lose all your config settings if you upgrade from an Rxxx version. (from before ESPEasy v2.0)
I assume this caused the problem. There should be a check in the OTA update to prevent this situation.

Re: Help - update bricked S20
It's in the making but older FW releases do not have a check thus it will not be a warning on older systems... If we would have anticipated this problem back then it would have been a warning in place... but not now.

Re: Help - update bricked S20
I have now tested with 'ESP Easy Flasher'.
Tried several .bin including ESPEasy_R147_1024 and with or without setting Wifi.
In all cases flashing is done, but Wifi is not working.
without setting: no ESP wifi is started
with setting: error message 'Unit do not have IP'
Any other idea? Please help!
This is really frustrating. How come that updating via OTA is failing and the device is dead?

Re: Help - update bricked S20
You could try flashing this blank 1MB file and then flash a real file after that... Can't do any harm.

Yes that was what I hoped the blank bin file would do. I might need to add a clean flash option to the Flasher. Thanks for reporting.

update:
my second S20 was dead as well.
clearing flash only did not do the trick.
solution:
- flash 1mb empty .bin
- clear flash using tool
- flash new .bin
so combination of step 1 and 2 was needed to wake up S20 again.

This is really frustrating. How come that updating via OTA is failing and the device is dead?
there was a major flash of the leds en the s20 was dead.
Connecting the programmer shows no com port and several leds on the programmer.
After a short of the rx/tx pins in connection with the programmer powered via usb,
The programmer showed up in the com ports.
Then loaded the blank.bin and after that the easysp that goes well. But no activity on the
S20 after that. No Wifi No leds. It seams that there is no power on it. Is it possible to
measure it and so yes where/what?
Is it possible that the s20 goes defective when programming FW over the GUI of the easysp?
Is the s20 realy dead or can I make it alive again?????? And how do I use the tool to clear
the s20 total to load a new FW.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

S20 only has 1MB and should not be updated OTA.
Did all steps several times. S20 responds on all actions but
the s20 stays dead after each action. No wifi and no leds at all.
I think the s20 is realy dead. Q is there a security resistor/whatever
that has/can been destroid?
Re: Help - update bricked S20
Connect to Serial Monitor program, then power up S20, you should see output
The LEDs are not pre-configured in the firmware..
If you have serial output - set the wifi via serial, then you should be able to use web-interface

Re: Help - update bricked S20
Sure, this says it's still alive,
Assume by now you have cold booted while connected to a serial monitor ?
Information you need will be visible to you then..
Then it will help to know the available serial commands
https://www.letscontrolit.com/wiki/inde ... _Reference
EG setting Wifi DHCP
Then the serial log will show the IP the node has been given, typing that IP into browser will take you there

I have cleared the memory, loaded a new easy sp and looked at the serial monitor.
I only see rules about connection failure as earlier described.
Via a serial program terminate I have given the commands. But nothing happens.
I am a newbee on this and dont know how further

But, you're using a serial programer right? Just disconnect the power cable between the programer and the Sonoff, don't disconnect the programer from the USB.

after disconnecting the sonoff from the FTDI nothing happens on the serial monitor.grovkillen wrote: ↑08 Jun 2018, 15:45 But, you're using a serial programer right? Just disconnect the power cable between the programer and the Sonoff, don't disconnect the programer from the USB.
When I connected the FTDI again on the sonoff the serial connection port is gone
an the FTDI power led and the 2 comm leds are on. It is not possible to open the
serial monitor because there is no com port detected. The sonoff seams to be locked.
I had this before and have to clear the memory with the tool from ESPressif with the internal
commands and after that I can see the com port again and programm the sonoff with the
cleared memory. But after the reloading of the esp bin nothing happens no wifi no leds.

Grab Termite
https://www.compuphase.com/software_termite.htm
with FTDI plugged in & Sonoff connected, no other serial monitors open (will only work with one at a time)
Configure correct COMs port to match FTDI
You should see output like you have already (every 30 seconds)
yes ? good.. now
With Termite running..
Click the button "Clear"
Unplug & Plug in FTDI to USB port with Sonoff connected, you should see output at power up
A line or 2 of garble, then Clear Readable text...

I doubt, the S20 is bricked, I have also a S20 and had some problems in the past.
- If you working with Windows, check the to see the port, where the adapter is connected
- Go back to the R_148 version, flash your S20. If you don't have the correct port (normally is 3 or 4) try the other one

I work with WIN10 all updated and an FTDI interface have done several clearance

until now.

Did you set the baud rate in Termite to 115200 ?
Are you seeing any 'Readable Text' in Termite ?
If so go back read my earlier post...

Re: Help - update bricked S20
Dear Users of this forum
You have been very helpfull to me to solve my problem
of the possible bricked sonof s20.
I let you know how I worked it out.
At first to solve the lock of the com port I used the
FTDI with the power and ground and shorted for a
second the rx and tx pins of the sonoff.
Now I can reach the sonoff again. The serial output
was totaly nothing.
I cleared the memory with the programm of espressif
ande the internal commands.
Then I loaded the blank.bin and after that I cleaned again
with the espressif tool.
After this I loaded the espeasy bin with the tool from Tungsten
In that tool I put the data of the wifi to contact with and marked
also the force DOUT.
At the end on the screen came the message of the loading and the
IP number 192.168.4.1 But this adress could not been reached by
the ping. Also where there the messages of the serial commands to
the wifi name and password.
After this I disconnected the FTDI and put the s20 sonoff in the
powerbox for electricity. I saw on my telephone for the first time
the esp easy 0 again. But it had not the ip adress 192.168.4.1.
The adress it had was 192.168.244.1.
After contacting this adress in the browser I could give up the wifi
network and password and than the sonoff s20 was available for use.
All setting where available and working.
Thank You all for thinking with me and the variable solutions where
given in wich a combination of them where effective to get it working
again. And I have learned a lot of the sonoff.
