MQTT retain flag

Would it be possible to set the retain flag for MQTT at the device level? I have several devices that measure environmental such as temperature and humidiy, but the same controller is also used to switch lights. I like to use the retain flag for the light status, but not for temperature sensor. I run mega-20180818 on my devices at the moment.
