Ikea "TRÅDFRI" smart lights serie based on ZigBee Light Link (ZLL)

#1 Post by Gamester17 » 26 Oct 2016, 12:31

Ikea have just released a new smart lamp lighting collection called "Tråfri" (Tradfri means 'wireless' in Swedish).

http://contentroom.ikea.today/behind-th ... d97c0f7700

http://press.ikea.se/ikea_smart_belysning/ (translated: https://translate.google.se/translate?s ... _belysning ).

According a spokesperson from Ikea this new "Tråfri" series is based on "ZigBee Light Link" (ZLL) protocol standard:

http://www.zigbee.org/zigbee-for-develo ... ight-link/

Ikea have not released or announced any internet/ethernet gateway, and only sell simple remotes so far.

Wonder if these could be controlled via RFLink assuming they use 868 MHz in Europe and 915 MHz in USA/Australia?

These "Trådfri" lamps begin to be sold from October 2016 at Ikea in Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy and Belgium.

The "Trådfri" serie will then launch in all other countries in Europe and North America later in April 2017.

@Stuntteam, I'm willing to buy the starter kit with one bulb with remote and donate to you, and I have sent PM to Stuntteam about this.

(UPDATE: I have posted an Ikea "Trådfri" lightbulb + remote starterkit to address given by the Stuntteam and they confirmed receiving it).

FYI; other than Philips Hue, others products that also use the ZigBee LightLink protocol standard are these:

LIGHTIFY series by OSRAM https://www.osram.com/osram_com/tools-a ... /index.jsp

GE Link Bulbs by General Electric http://www.gelinkbulbs.com

Greenwave Reality also used to sell ZigBee Light Link based bulbs but thier site looks to be down http://www.zigbee.org/portfolio/greenwave-reality/

Lightify can work with the Hue bridge but there are some pairing issues.
At least with Hue it seems one bulb can only be connected to one hub.

As for zigbee itself, there are 3 versions / flavors.
Zigbee 3.0 is the latest and combines the two previous versions: ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) and ZigBee Home Automation (ZHA).

From what I read, all the products released so far in this new "Trådfri" collection from Ikea only uses the ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) protocol standard, though I have no idea on which frequency bands it uses it.

Looks like someone asked some related questions regarding ZLL and the Texas Instruments CC2530 here:

https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless_con ... 8/t/252635

Not sure that is of any help for RFLink integration though.

Does TRÅDFRI? use 2.4GHz, 868MHz or 433MHz?
Does this mean that CC2500 will work with Ansluta but not with the new TRÅDFRI?
Can anyone (StuntTeam?) comment on this?

Tradfri communicates on 2.4 Ghz.
So far it is unknown if the CC2500 can be used. There are other possibilities as well.

MMM

What are the other options?

Can i solder the cc2530 on the pins, when they are in use for the other receiver?
2 wires 1 pin, no problem?

@Stuntteam, any progress to report about looking into if ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) could be supported by RFLink?

Looking forward to hear about any news about controlling Ikea "TRÅDFRI" series and other devices using ZLL.

Ikea have now released a new Motion Sensor Kit, a new Dimmer Remote Kit, new smart lightbulbs, as well a a Network Gateway / Hub in their "Tradfri" series ("Trådfri" mean wireless in Swedish), which all use ZLL (ZigBee Light Link) protocol, to be released on the 31st of March 2017 in selected countries.

They released the lights in the Netherlands as well.

Would be nice if they could be controlled by RFLink out of the box ( with possible a firmware update )

FYI; there are loads development discussion (and more links) here on controlling Ikea Trådfri lightbulbs indirectly via the newly released Ikea Trådfri Gateway:

https://github.com/bwssytems/ha-bridge/issues/570

Jaime Jiménez (from the company Ericsson) who is an active member of the IPSO Alliance’s working group, especially the Semantic WG that published the IPSO Smart Object Guidelines, posted this great teardown of the Ikea Trådfri implementation:

http://jaimejim.github.io/tradfri/

IPSO defines objects and resources that map to device properties. If we got to the IPSO repository and look in particular at the Light Control we can see that it allows a light to be turned on or off and its dimmer setting to be controlled as a % between 0 and 100.

https://github.com/IPSO-Alliance/pub/bl ... l/3311.xml

https://github.com/IPSO-Alliance/pub

He also shared a couple of links to related articles he posted earlier:

http://jaimejim.github.io/lwm2m-yang/

http://jaimejim.github.io/coap-functionality-lwm2m/

Also checkout the IoTSI Workshop as a reference:

https://www.iab.org/activities/workshops/iotsi/

Interestingly enough Michael Koster (who is the main author of these IPSO Objects) posted a comment to Jaime's post staying: "Great move on IKEA's part here. Too bad we hadn't published the IPSO lighting objects yet. Maybe we can talk them into registering the new identifiers with OMNA.".

He referenses another that framework written by Michael Koster (the main author of the data models and IPSO Objects that Ikea Trådfri uses):

Ikea "TRÅDFRI" series ZigBee devices uses 2.4 GHz band so suspect that the stuntteam solved it with a CC2500 transceiver?

...another possibility is that the hacked a Ikea TRÅDFRI remote or just reused used the chip from a Ikea TRÅDFRI remote?

FYI, Ikea will be releasing color/colour (RGB) lamps in the Ikea Trådfri series this upcoming October.

The news that Ikea is working on RGB lamps for the the Ikea Trådfri series has already been hinted at previously, both as spooted by independent developers looking at the Ikea Trådfri API and firmware, as well as leaked from Ikea's own Trådfri series developers who said in an interview from two years back that they are working on RGB lights and plugs too, so the dates when releasing them is probably moer up to the marketing department.
