Do you know if the TSO4838 should respond to a TV remote??
When I used to use the old TSO1838 devices (many years ago with PIC microcontrollers) I had to fire an IR beam that was modulated with a 38KHz carrier.

Right - bit of an update on progress. Eventually discovered I was using the setting for RGBW in the Device Tab - my NeoPixel strip was RGB - oops!! I removed the level shifter for the Data Line and connected the NeoPixel strip's Din to D6 on my Wemos D1 Mini via a 270R resistor. Now everything works...

My suggestion is to flash it using the bin file for ESP8285 (sorry 'bout that typo) since the ESP8285 is equal to the ESP8266 except that the 8285 has 1MB built in mem.
