I'm not sure of the exact way to setup espeasy but I set up an esp8266 with ser2net and connected the tx0 & rx0 to the esp8266 rx & tx ie the the tx of the mega goes to the rx of the esp and the rx of the mega connected to the tx of the esp8266. One thing that was important and I don't know if it is the case with the node mcu, but the esp8266 is not 5v tolerant so I had to run the tx0 of the mega through a logic level shifter to the rx of the esp8266. The mega is 3.3v tolerant so I just connected the rx0 on the mega to the tx of the esp8266

hope this helps
