More than 16 RTS remotes

Hi,
I just made a 433.42MHz RFLink for my Somfy blinds, and it works great.
However, I have 18 blinds... And the RFLink firmware can have only 16 remotes in memory. I would prefer not having two RFLink just for this, especially since I plan having a 433.92MHz version for the Oregon stuff.
1) Is it difficult/feasible to make a custom firmware with 32 or more remotes for an Arduino newbie?
2) Is there a reason why the standard firmware was limited to 16 remotes? It seems that with 32 or 64 slots, almost any home would fit in a RFLink
3) If I want to listen to the physical remotes as well as controlling the blinds, will they use extra slots (18*2 = 36) as the rolling codes need to be stored in memory?
Thanks!
