backup rules?

#1 Post by manjh » 23 May 2017, 16:23

Perhaps this was discussed elsewhere, but I cannot find a post about it.
When I make a backup of the settings of an ESP units, it looks like it does not include the rules!
Is this "as designed"?

Hello Manjh,

The backup for the settings does not include rules, that is correct.

Since there are many changes pending in ESPEasy2.0.0, the backup might be changed in the future.

As it is no problem to backup rules manually - it is just text and can be copied&pasted to a .txt file - i don't think
it is on the highest priority level for the Dev's. ;)

I understand both replies, but it does not bring us to a fully secure backup situation.

Currently the function is called "Save settings", and it is not immediately clear that this does not include the rules.
I understand how simple it is to copy this as text file, and I will do that for now.
The combination "Save" and a text copy gives me everything... or is there anything else not included?

The new functions in 2.0+ are not the same as a backup, they are file copies. I would prefer a single-button function that simply copies everything. It could even be automated by pulling the settings into a server or NAS.

I can move forward for now, no big deal.

I didn't test the functions with the 2.0.0devx-Versions up to now.
As they are "work in progress" i don't use them in productive scenarios.

With the R120 and R14x versions the security settings are not saved.
This was made due to giving away configs without disclosing your WiFi passwords.
If i interpret the wiki correectly they are saved in a separate file there.

I know it is not what you're asking for (and I have personally opened up the idea of integrating the rules in to the settings file here). BUT, as a workaround I use these URLs to automatically download my backups from my nodes (based on the upcoming 2.0+):

<espeasyip>/filelist/config.dat
<espeasyip>/filelist/rules1.txt
<espeasyip>/filelist/rules2.txt
...

Upon launching the URL the file will be downloaded straight away and it should not be an big thing to have a script do this for you, storing the files under the specific node's folder.

That looks like a good workaround, but it doesn't work in my situation.
First command I enter in a browser, it will ask me to logon to the node and after that comes up with the default "Main" screen.
When I try to re-enter the command after logging in, it comes back with a blank screen with this text:

Code: Select all

URI: /filelist/config.dat
Method: GET
Arguments: 0
Am I missing something?

BIG MISTAKE! Remove the "/filelist" for direct download. Sorry!

<espeasyip>/rules1.txt
<espeasyip>/rules2.txt

No change. Still need to logon and then get the main screen, then tried again and same response. No download.
This node is on build 147.

OK... which is still WIP, right? Is it stable enough for my regular ESP nodes, or should I stay away for now?

I've used if for all my nodes with no real issues. But if you have really "life dependent" systems running I would try it out on a lab node first. (I'm on the 2.0.0-dev7 version).

Hmmm... I don't think I have medical or military grade applications.... :D
I guess I'll give it a try. Is there a beta testgroup I could join?
