Connect ESP to hidden SSID: bug description and workaround

#1 Post by grhhm » 19 Jun 2017, 21:52

Forgive me reporting problem here. Please, let me know better location for the reporting. Thanks!

Builds tested:
- 120
- 147_RC8
- 2.0.0-dev10-normal
- 2.0.0-dev10-dev

Steps to reproduce:
Prerequisite: have your WiFi network SSID hidden.
1. Flash the firmware build.
2. Power cycle the ESP.
3. Connect the ESP_0 AP and open config page in browser.
4. Enter your network SSID in "Other" field and passphrase. Submit.

Expected behavior:
ESP should connect the provided SSID details and get IP from DHCP.

Actual behavior:
ESP keeps in AP mode. Reboot doesn't help.

Workaround:
1. Make your WiFi broadcasting its SSID.
2. Perform normal configuration procedure by choosing your AP SSID by the radiobutton.
3. Reboot ESP and access it by newly assigned address.
4. Configure some basic settings (system name, something else, try to set IP if you prefer it static).
5. Set your WiFi AP to hide the SSID.
6. Reboot the ESP.
7. If IP was left on DHCP (empty IP fields) then: Scan your IP network to find the new address of the ESP (hint: host name resolution helps to determine correct ESP module).
8. Continue as regular: settings, rules, etc.

I connect only to hidden SSID using both 120 and 2.0.0-dev10-normal

Normally no problem with hidden SSID. Have you spaces or special characters in your SSID (others than 0-9 and a-z)? Then try without them.
