ESP8266 entering AP mode when WiFi down

I recently noticed that when WiFi is switched off or down (during router upgrade or for maintenance) all previously connected ESPs appear as access points on channel 1 (and can be connected provided you know the WPA AP Mode Key).
Is that a bug or a feature? How can that be disabled?

It's by design but maybe we should have a (lets say) 10 minute delay for it to happen if it was recently connected to a working WiFi.

An option to define 'fallback' would be even greater. I have no use for AP mode, as all ESP devices are controlled by openhab/MQTT, so if my Wi-Fi goes down, I'd prefer espeasy to try and reconnect continuously.
Maybe if the AP passphrase is left empty, then AP fallback mode is disabled, if it's filled in, then it works with that passphrase. This also avoids the device broadcasting an SSID with a well-known passphrase.

I'm also using openhab mqtt. It ist not a real problem, as they reconnect as soon as WiFi is back up again. However I don't like them to appear in the list of available APs during the downtime of WiFi. (my neighbours do not need to know all my ESPs)

It is a feature.
You can try to compile and use the Wifiman plugin which is in the playground, and has a killap command, which effectively disables AP mode.

+1 For disable AP mode option once configured or at last hidden SSID(at worst).
