Bad flash anything else except espeasy mega

Hi!
I've been using a wemos d1 mini for a few months for expirimenting.
Originally it was flashed with firmware upto v147.
All ok.
Then more recently flashed with esp mega firmware.
Again ok.
However now I can't seem to flash it with anything else but mega firmware?!
Any other firmwares (including the blink example) it just infinitely loops in the serial monitor:
Fatal exception (0):
epc1=0x40237968, epc2=0x00000000, epc3=0x00000000, excvaddr=0x00000000, depc=0x00000000
I've trashed flashing 4mb blank.bin, after that I get the expected etcs main.c (or something like that) from the serial.
Any ideas? Strange one!
