EdgeX - What is this?

#1 Post by garnold » 11 Dec 2019, 20:22

I'm trying to better understand what EdgeX is and thought I might be able to learn from some of the smart people here. I did check out the main site for this topic, but even after reading and watching a few videos, I'm still in the dark. So is this a protocol to send data? Is it a server that captures data? What do you do with this thing and how is it going to revolutionize IoT??? Lastly, where does ESPEasy come into play with EdgeX?

Well I never heard of EdgeX until you mentioned it here.
So right now, I cannot say anything useful about it.

It's an open source framework, and code, for edge computing, and an open IoT framework. The framework uses lots of different open source standards, protocols, and open sourced applications and servers, and covers the application needs for edge computing. Typically, the domain of processing is for instance to receive data from sensors, the EdgeX platform has a a bridge to receive many types of protocols, then do processing on the received data, maybe kick off workflows to backend systems, can store the data, and only sends along exceptions to cloud servers, or upload the data, either raw or in summary to the cloud.

The picture below is a good overview of the architecture.

Well, ESPEasy fits all "Supporting services", some basics of the microservices part and quite a few of the device services.

That "Device services" group is a bit strange, seeing from the perspective of ESPEasy.
Those are a "transport layer", but some are just for interfacing to a sensor device and some are for transporting it to and from another processing unit.
More like the "Distribution" in the "export services" group.

I'll be working with this software at work soon and will let ya all know how it plays out 👍
