New module from AI Thinker: ESP-12S

#1 Post by Drum » 23 Aug 2016, 14:28

I haven't seen this one before. I don't know how much better it is. From Aliexpress.. By the way, the specs are available (in Chinese) from Ai-thinker (Google ESP-12S) and it is listed at the FCC so I think it is safe to say it is real. Pins appear to be the same as the other ESP-12 modules.

ESP8266-12 is an enhanced version of the ESP8266-12S, improve the peripheral circuit, the four laminates plate process, enhanced impedance matching, signal output is better, whether it is stable or anti jamming ability, PCB antenna after professional laboratory testing, perfect matching, after ROHS certification, have been greatly improved! For users before choosing ESP-12, even if the product has not been made, the enhanced version is fully compatible with the firmware before the ESP-12, based on the SPI and the new six IO port, mouth extraction, development is more convenient, more widely used!

I looked at this again and it appears to be the same as the ESP-12F but without the extra row of connectors opposite the antenna, which were useless to most people anyway. My understanding is the antenna for the ESP-12F was revised based on actual performance testing, and and is better than the ESP-12E. The same antenna design appears to be used on the ESP3212 and ESP-WROOM32.

My Only concern is the datasheet fails to list the amount of memory, and I do not see a "ESP-12S" on the ai-Thinker site, only a 7S and 8S. I think I will stick to the ESP-12F for now.

I agree - ordering a few more 12E/ F units for now.
