Multi Purpose ESP setup

#1 Post by vorsselmansP » 05 Mar 2017, 09:15

Requirements

Serial communication
4 Digital inputs (with pull ups)as Toggle switches
Temperature measurement
(make an easy reset pin)

On hold:
Analog (ADC)
deepsleep
power supply
The concept should be an all-round module that i can use to activate and deactivate my lights. and that also gives me the temperature in the room.

Getting started

I have some shields for the ESP but and was trying to figure out how it would be in combination with a PCB. As the project cannot stay on the breadboard forever. with the traditional pin down configuration i would loose a lot of space and I still needed to mount my resistors and switches and temp sensor. So I decided to give the alternative reverse mounting a go. And solder the resistors directly at the back of the shield. clearing all the space on my PCB to host my break-out solution.
I probably mount the ESP on female headers creating some extra space between the ESP and the PCB

Nice.
Did you consider to buy a wemos d1 mini or alike. (+/- 3,50E)

I know, you are losing the joy of building it yourself, but it has all kinds of things included.

Such as usb, power-control, necessary C's and R's for more reliable functioning.
And it works mostly out of the box.
It has more or less the same size as the white board your using.
So it saves you time to build, time you can invest in clever software design.

For the WeMos there is even a stackable whiteboard availlable.

Another universal board is the NodeMCU, which has some more pins out equaled to the WeMos.
It's around 3...4 USD at the chinese platforms (AliExpress etc)

I know there are probably better solutions the going "barebone"
but it also takes the fun away of building.

I originally started to code in python before i stumbled on ESP Easy

also the main reason i started with the esp was that i wanted to make a display wireless and control it.

So one thing led to another.

That all said ESPEasy was suprisingly complete and straight forward to deploy.
Unfortunatly the "original" developer has temporarly abandonend this project.

Strange remark, the one who has taken over is doing it very well.
Could you do it better?
