Please recommend me good esp8266 board ..

#1 Post by spachal » 12 May 2019, 21:33

Hi, I spent today half of day with flashing my esp8266 boards ;] .. I have the same boards as described here: https://github.com/letscontrolit/ESPEasy/issues/2008, i.e. Wemos brand - ordered here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/-/32820380705.html.
And the only fw that I found to be usable is ESP_Easy_mega-20190212_dev_ESP8266_4096.bin, all other (older and newer ones) have problems with wifi connection..

I tried a lot of flashers sw, many times loades blank fw to clear boards, but there must be some fw changes that cause connection problems. Bins from 05/2018 are also working, so it's probably not problem of hw (I have the same three boards).

So can you please recommend me some cheap and 'working' ESP8266 board, Aliexpress / eBay? I'd like to use newest fw builds, but with boards those I have, it's not possible. Thank you!

Maybe some of these?

Or should I choose esp32? I need just some temperature / humidity / pressure readings and send values over mqtt to broker..

I would recommend the official Wemos store . You can find other D1 mini (pro) boards, but most of the time they are copies with wrong components and it will create random issues.
Robotdyn also seem to have some esp8266 boards though I have not tried them (but their other boards seem to be of good quality).

I confirm, official Wemos, now Lolin is a good choice

30+ ESP units for production and test. Ranging from control of heating equipment, flow sensing, floor temp sensing, energy calculation, floor thermostat, water usage, to an interactive "fun box" for my grandson. Mainly Wemos D1.

I would go for one of those NodeMCU's
One problem: @aliexpress you'll have to be able to exercise patience during 3 to 5 weeks.
Around the corner you pay 3 times more but you can go back to the shop when something's wrong.
No patience required, best aftersale service guaranteed.

Hi, thanks to all! :]

I'm going to buy 12pcs, so the price matters, a little bit :]. That's why I'm looking for any tested esp8266, that is without problems with current espeasy releases..
There is no problem with delivery time, I can wait. That's why I'd like to order boards from AE/eBay and save some bucks for other IoT toys :))

After my experience with Wemos I'd prefer to order any 'other brand' .. Maybe the quality is better now, but I already had two D1 mini boards (appr. year ago), and on both boards there were problems with microUSB connectore / power supply. Maybe these boards weren"t qenuine, I don't know. But considering to those problem with my current Wemos boards ..

So have you ordered some cheaper board this year and tried them with some newer fw? If so, please send me contact to seller or product link, thanks! :]
Please excuse my English, thanks!

I had a similar issue with the micro USB power connector parting company with the printed circuit board (on a couple of boards).
I bought some of these power adapters and brought the two boards 'back to life'.
The adapaters are listed on Banggood, AliExpress and Amazon.

Only thing with those power boards are that they output the same voltage on the USB port as the one you plug into the DC plug. Be aware!

I've not tried using the DC plug, only the USB connector (which works fine).

There are two fixed-voltage regulators on the board - one for +5V and one for +3V3.
I would have thought these regulators would have dealt with the differing input conditions.

When I have a spare moment I'll buzz-out the circuit with my meter.

Cheers from David.

Just re-read your email.

I think you mean the wiring of the DC plug and the USB connector are DIRECTLY JOINED TOGETHER.

I didn't realise that !!!!!!

If that's true - then it's something to be aware of as you could easily destroy an item/device if it was plugged into the USB port and the adapter was powered from the DC plug !!!!

>dynamicdave: grovkillen is right, not all these power supplies are 'problematic', but I destroyed one D1 mini by myself, imho there is still my picture on wiki :)) .. https://www.letscontrolit.com/wiki/inde ... itle=Power
Just take any voltmeter and before connecting any device to this kind of power supply check the output.

But OK, I just orders three genuine D1 mini, for testing, the price is appr. $15, shipping is combined, so total price is not so high :]
Please excuse my English, thanks!
