Controller Protocol OpenHAB MQTT and not Mosquitto MQTT?

#1 Post by whatsupskip » 03 Sep 2018, 07:13

Why is the Controller Protocol labelled OpenHAB MQTT and not Mosquitto MQTT?

I thought this was a bit strange as OpenHAB doesn't actually have a MQTT broker, but requires the install of the Mosquitto MQTT broker.

The controller is posting MQTT messages in the format openHAB is expecting it. The way openHAB wants the messages/topics is almost generic except the leading front slash. So that is why we have it. We got a "generic MQTT" controller on the wanted feature list but it's not top priority since you can tweak the openHAB one to suit most generic needs.

ok thanks, so in effect OpenHAB MQTT is a subset of Mosquitto MQTT.

This probably explains why I am a bit confused by some of the terms on the controller setting.

Well, you don't necessarily need to use Mosquitto as a broker/server. MQTT is the protocol, Mosquitto is the server. But other servers for MQTT exist and are being used.

I am going to look at OpenHab to see if that might suit might needs better anyway.
