In the documentation on the SleepMode it refers to "its recommended to set the Message Interval to 100 (or less) in the advanced settings page".
Does this Message Interval only apply to MQTT?
The ESP8266 I am setting up is only using EMONCMS and there is no setting for Message Interval when using this as the controller.

Re: SleepMode & Message Interval Documentation
The "Message interval" used to be a MQTT only setting (remember, Wiki documentation is dated, refer to ReadTheDocs for more up to date documentation)
Currently the controllers all use a "controller queue", which has the "Minimum Send Interval", which does what this old setting did, per controller.
So please have a look at the link I gave, to see the meaning of all those controller parameters.
The general idea behind this lowering the send interval is to flush the messages as quickly as possible to go back to sleep again.
But keep in mind what the receiving end allows as minimal interval. For example sending to Thingspeak with a free account only allows ever N minutes.
