Garage door opener with OpenHAB
Hi,
I used Shelly and ESPEasy to setup a garage door opener with OpenHAB.
A guide is here:
https://community.openhab.org/t/setting ... easy/98749
Maybe it could be useful for someone else.
Regards,
/Martin

Re: Garage door opener with OpenHAB
It's great to see ESPEasy applications. They provide inspiration.
I'll share an idea you might like to add to your project:
My garage door has a very similar solution using an Insteon I/O module. And I use OpenHab too. I added an OpenHab rule that checks to see if the garage door is still open late at night. I could have made it automatically close the door. But instead a warning email is sent that tells me to close it (to avoid leaving it open all night). This little trick has saved me a couple times over the years.

Thanks for the tip!
I decided to have it automatically close at night - easier for me!
It was also very practical to have the possibility for OpenHAB to control the door; now my kids can open with just their phones.

Re: Garage door opener with OpenHAB
There are built-in safety mechanism provided by all modern garage door openers (invisible light beam, excess force sensing, over-current). But the "worry" issue is the reason why I chose to send an email instead of automatically closing the door.
I prefer someone be present when the door is in motion. That avoids any surprises, including the chance of capturing a stray animal (or thief) that will end up on the wrong side of the closed door. But there are consumer products that allow WiFi garage door closure from afar, so that suggest it's reasonably safe to do.

Technology may be ready... but are you ready for it?

Well if an insurance company already advertises with it, then it can only be good, right?

Funny videos. Oh sure, we're giggling now. But those videos hint how technology will have the last laugh.

Those were TV commercials here in the Netherlands... years ago.
And commercials of that company were the only reason to watch commercials. They are truly funny.

Re: Garage door opener with OpenHAB
I completely automated my garage door opening/closing with espeasy and voltage dividers and ESPs running as beacons in the car, and ultrasonic sensors to detect presence in the garage bays.
When the ignition of a car is switched on the beacon signals openhab via mqtt. Depending on garage bay occupancy and other factors the door then opens. You drive out and the beacon goes offline (LWT) which signals the door to close. The doors have infrared beams for safety. I also tapped in to those to turn on the garage lights in the dark just like modern openers do.
I mention this in case someone else comes along looking for ideas
