Flashing a Sonoff DualR3

#1 Post by dbemowsk » 28 Jul 2023, 05:18

So I flashed a Sonoff DualR3 tonight with the ESP_Easy_mega_20230623_climate_ESP32_4M316k.factory.bin firmware. I didn't realize it had climate in the name and after booting it and looking at my WiFi network, I was expecting to see some kind of SSID with ESP in the name and I didn't. I saw one named climate though. I thought at that point that I maybe did something wrong with the flash and was going to solder it back up to the FTDI to try again, but I decided to try logging in to the Climate SSID with the configesp password and it worked. Can someone tell me if the climate build will work on this device or are the climate builds set up for something else?

Thanks

To be able to do any energy measurement using the on-board chip of the DualR3, you will need the Energy build, as that has those plugins included.

You can change via the Firmware Update button on the Tools page, just choose the same CPU architecture (ESP32, not with c3, s2 or s3 suffix) and Flash configuration (4M316k) with Energy in the name, but this time use the .bin file, not the .factory.bin, that won't go via the OTA (Over The Air) update.

As I was looking into this, I noticed that I mistakenly bought the lite versons of these which don't have the energy monitoring on them. They will only do the switching. The next ones I buy I will make sure have that.

So what functionality does the climate build give you?

See the list of plugins per build: https://espeasy.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... al-plugins

The Climate build includes a lot of environment sensors, like temperature, humidity etc. But I wouldn't connect anything to a Dual R3, either lite or regular, as the GPIO pins are most likely connected to mains power and thus a health hazard/dangerous!

I wasn't necessarily thinking of connecting any other sensors, I was just wondering really if using the climate build over one of the others would maybe prevent the relays on the R3 from working normally.

Nope.
Only difference can be that the "normal" build may offer slightly more features as the other builds may have LIMIT_BUILD_SIZE defined.

If you expect to install mostly smart switches like the DualR3 (-lite), it might be a benefit if all those units have the same build-type installed, and 'Energy' sounds like the most fitting there.

I will do that. I found out how easy it was to do OTA updates, so switching to the energy build sounds easy enough.
