Starting with Home Automation
Hi everyone! My name is Pim, I am a pensionado and a computer hobbyist. I live in the Netherlands, province Drenthe. I wanted to start with home automation and thought that the best option would be Home Assistant on Raspberry Pi. As I had a RPi4 lying around, I loaded the related operating system for the pi on it's sd-card, booted and found Home Assistant at the given ip-address. "Only" my three Aranet Sensors (2 measure temperature, humidity and CO2 and another one measures radiation) were found by Home Assistant. I also have some Klik-Aan-Klik-Uit (KAKU or in English COCO) switches which operate on 433,42 and/or (?) 433,92 MHz. And I have a few WOOX devices (smart power outlets and a smart ceiling lamp) which operate on 2.412~2.472GHz. I would also like to operate/manage these devices via Home Assistant. On Internet I found RFLink Gateway (https://www.rflink.nl/) and Nodo Shop (www.nodo-shop.nl). At the latter I bought the "RFLink Gateway for Domoticz" and are waiting for it's delivery. At the moment I have no clue how to install this gateway (hardware and software wise). I started reading "Build manual for breakout board RFLink Pro V1.1" from the Nodo Shop Download page, which mentioned the URL of this forum. So here I am. Another link mentioned in this manual is that of the ESP8266 forum (www.esp8266.nu/forum/) which I cannot reach because it doesn't respond in time. At the moment I am a bit puzzled about the role of Domoticz. RFLink seems to work with this home automation package but I want to work with Home Assistant. Are these going to conflict with each other? Further I want to buy some wall switches which can be connected to Home Assistant to be able operate some devices also manually. I get the idea that the best candidates are switches working with Zigbee. Any advise?
Re: Starting with Home Automation
If you like to switch to Zigbee, then I suggest to look for the Sonoff Zigbee dongle: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B09KXTCMSC?ref ... _dt_1&th=1
This is known to work (very good) with HomeAssistant.
For using Zigbee, you need to know there are endpoint devices and router devices.
Typically battery powered devices are endpoint devices and thus will not help extending your Zigbee mesh.
Not all mains powered devices are set to act as a router device. As a rule of thumb, if the devices are mentioned to work without "blue" or "neutral" or "N", you can assume they will not act as a router device.
Some of those devices which are advertised to work without neutral also may generate a high pitch noise.
On the HomeAssistant forum there are lots of topics about "AliExpress" sold devices with comments on whether they work and if they have a router profile.
Router devices can act as a node for extending the range of your mesh.
This as a very short introduction to Zigbee.
Oh and welcome
