I haven't done this.
Buying a new ESPboard is cheaper than buying a 32mbit flash chip.
It can be financially interested to do if you own a lot of old ESP boards with 512kByte memory chips that you like to upgrade. I have only a few of them and do not own a hot air iron so I just bought a new ESP12E.

If you do this modification on a ESP201 you can free two extra GPIO pins, GPIO9 and GPIO10 , like is described here: http://smarpl.com/content/esp8266-esp-2 ... and-gpio10

I would probably like to do this mod on my ESP201 if I have a 32mbit flash chip.

I just ordered 10 x 4M memory
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/WINBOND- ... 79928.html
£3.36 for 10 (seems cheap enough?)

I intend to upgrade some of my esp01 so that i can OTA Flash firmware, this will save me building new boards to accomodate ESP12's
Also unless I'm missing something ESP201's & 07's are the only ones with external antennas but only 512k or 1M ? so OTA upgrades won't work

Hence if you need external antenna with 4m you need to change the flash memory?

I just have to wait the 30 odd days for them turn up :(

I have upgraded a 201 module with the winbond 25Q32.
It is working fine. But the Chip is bigger. You have to bend the legs.
I also have done it to use OTA.

@ hamster

you do not need to build new boards for using ota on ESP_01.
New Esp 01 sold today often/usually have 4mbyte flash on board.

I managed to upgrade 5 x esp207's from 512K to 4mbyte, I then reflashed them with the latest firmware r108
And they have been working normally since.
