ping a device problem

#1 Post by BartSr » 28 Mar 2024, 09:43

Hi,
An esp can be seen via port 8266 by all other esp's in the network.

There are 14 ESP's online.

Error: pinging an esp from an other esp fails. whereas it was possible in the past
also that esp what cannot be pinged is not in the list showing all esp's which are online.

but other esp's do show complete list of all esp's which are online

Any suggestion?

First things that pop up in my head:
- All on the same subnet?
- Subnet mask correct?
- Can both ESPs (the one sending ping and the one being pinged) be reached via ping from another PC in the same subnet?
- Both ESPs connected to the same AP/SSID? For example on a typical "guest" network, clients cannot communicate with eachother, only with the gateway.
- Is a ping to either of both ESPs from another host constant or fluctuating?
- ECO mode enabled on either one?
- Correct UDP port?
- Tried to reboot either ESP?

TD-er,
what I found: the problem started after I added a ping task. The load then increased to 97%. Thereafter the device went down.
Just a few days ago I swapped that ESP as the original ESP suffered from just text-layout iso the fancy look.
Also an output-pin seems to suffer as the led, connected to it with serial resistance just showed dimmed brilliance.
But whan I tried ping task to new ESP again load increase to 97%. Without ping enabled load decrease to 8%.

Any suggestion?

No idea, have to test here using the ping plugin to see why it might need so many resources.
Do you ping to a DNS name or an IP address?

Maybe you can disable the task, save it , reboot and then enable the task after a reboot using a command (tools page):

taskenable,N (with N the tasknr)

This will not save the enabled state, so if the unit becomes unresponsive you can simply reboot it. (or power cycle)

I pinged to 192.168.2.200

I disabled the ping task. load around 7%

I enabled the task using taskenable,8
Load increases to about 77%

I disabled task 8 in regular way.
Load immediately drops to around 7%

Might have to do with this binaire file in relation to config.dat from other binairy file?

Don't worry too much about that load number, it just means that some more CPU cycles are spent on actual code being executed. And while it may make the ESP somewhat less responsive, it should still work as intended.

Ath, I believe that the very high load which was reported caused the esp to drop offline several times. Once load was decreased the system seems stable as before I started this very pingtask.
