ESPeasy Boot/Reset loop ESP8266 01

#1 Post by Spard » 07 May 2022, 15:18

Hello,

I realy need some help, I make a lot of research and test but I can't solve my problem.

I flash ESPeasy on a ESP8266 01. The flash is OK but when I reboot the esp and try to connect to his wifi, the esp seem to reboot non stop. I try many solution like change the firmware, use an older firware, an other flasher, use different power supply etc... I have always this boot loop, it's make me crazy.

In other hand, I flash Tasmota on the same module, and everything run perfectly.

I'm news to this module, and It's probably a sillymistake on my part.

Have you an idea to solve this problem ?

Setup I use :
ESP8226 01 https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B088LS ... UTF8&psc=1

ESPeasy firmware (last update) ESP_Easy_mega_20220427_normal_ESP8266_1M.bin and trying a lot other :(

ESP.Easy.Flasher and NODEMCU Pyflasher

And this serial monitor when ESP8266 boot with ESP_Easy_mega_20220427_normal_ESP8266_1M.bin

Code: Select all

According to the specifications, it seems that you have 1MB ESP01's but the error suggests that there is an issue with writing to the configuration file, so either the flash is not OK, or it actually only has 512 kB. And ESPEasy no longer can run on a 512 kB ESP.
A few steps you can try:
1) First flash the blank_1MB.bin file to clear out any disturbing content, then re-flash using the file you mentioned.

2) If that still doesn't work, have a close look at the flash-chip on the board, and report the number that is on there (or a close-up photo) (you can also google it), so we can determine if it is 1 MB or 512 kB.

Also check the brand of the flash chip... <kuch>PUYA</kuch>

I do the 1) and nothing change.

I have 2 modules, and they have both this issue.
It's very hard to read the ref. I think ut's the same ref on the both: ZD25W08DY or Z025W08DY (?) I found nothing on google.

I just test a third module sell with a 4 relays shield, and it's work !! Its flash memory is T25S80 (8Mb according to alldatasheet.com)

According to this site https://www.esp8266.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13659
I have esp8266-01S, it's strange that the memory is not the right one. Maybe an old module.

To confirm, is there an old version of espeasy wich support 512kb ?

thanks your help

That has been very long ago ( > 4 years) that a 512 kB version of ESPEasy was available, so the best answer would be: no.
Most likely, your flash chip is of the puya brand, and that is known to cause issues :(

The 512k model is not using PUYA chips.
PUYA chips have other issues, like not writing data as any other flash chip does.
But there is a patch for PUYA chips in the ESP8266/Arduino repository and I know that should work as I wrote it.

The reason a 512k model is not working is that the file system is written to non-existing addresses.
So if you received a board with 512k and you did order one with a larger chip, then you could ask for a refund from the seller.

N.B. you can also replace the flash chip and you should for sure use a 4M chip while you're swapping it.

I sure there is no brand on the chip, only characters. But it could be Puya.
I found the code of Puya patch but I don't understand how to use it. I only use .bin, and I don't know how to compil all this code.

Whatever, you have brought me answers to my problem :) , thank you so much guys :!: .

The PUYA patch is active, so if it detects chips of that brand, it will run the alternate code for writing to flash.
So that's not the issue here.
It is very likely you've got a 512k flash module.

I can add an error to the log to show if the flashed bin is not intended for the detected flash chip.

I think the use of ESP01 is not very high anymore, at least not for new projects, as the Wemos D1 mini and NodeMCU clones are quit cheap these days, and even ESP32's aren't very expensive anymore, so most users seem to enjoy the easier use of a unit with 4 MB flash (that allows to do OTA updates) and a more flexible amount of GPIO pins.

That said, do you have such 4MB ESP8266 or ESP32 available to validate that 'stuff' is working as intended? Or maybe even with some ESP01s from a different batch/supplier? As I've had very reliable results with those ESP01s myself, but I only use the remaining I have in stock for projects that use a single sensor, and won't buy any new ones, most likely.
