Is it possible to use any kind of sound sensors with esp easy/wemos? I would like to be able to make things react to knock-sequences or whistles etc.

sure, very easy, you can f.i. use a module like this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microphone-Sens ... SwMgdX18Bk

The output will change as soon as there is a certain level of noise/sound detected. The switch-level can be set with the potentiometer. The output of the module can be connected to a GPIO-input of the esp8266 which is configured as a normal on/off switch.

This module works from 3.3 to 5V so it can be fed from the same powersource as the esp. But I think for better stability and performance of the sound module it must be fed with 5V and the output ´must´ have a 1kohm resistor in series to the GPIO.

I want to know this too.

Is it possible to make a sequence?

Like this:
https://www.mysensors.org/build/knock

So it reacts on a sequence of a sound, and not only the sound.

Here is another device that can do that only it is $129,= each when it is available.

These Sonoff devices have an inbuilt sound sensor. I have not written anything with ESPEasy for it yet, but there is firmware out there that gives MQTT output. Should not be too hard to adapt
