How to config ESP easy with Ubuntu mosquitto

I have a computer that is running Ubuntu 16.10 and I am trying to install mosquitto to be the broker for ESP Easy.
I have flashed the sonoff (esp8266 device) with Espeasy and have no problem to use commercial MQTT brokers such as cloudmqtt and mqtt-dashborad. My configuration "Name" is sonoff1.
However, I have problem to communicate to my Ubuntu mosquitto server, either subscribe or publish. The Esp Easy does not take publish topic eg. /sonoff1/gpio/12
When I subscribe /sonoff1/#, I only get a number 16 whereas I should get continuous report from ESP Easy, like uptime/Minutes or Status of the pin.

I suspect it is a protocol issue, what protocol should I use with Ubuntu mosquitto? I tried Openhab mqtt and Domotize mqtt without any success.
