I have solder and flash my new sonoff, the first of 4 I have gotten ... But the ESP_0 wifi is not coming up and the serial monitor shows funny symbols.
What have I done wrong, before I solder and flash the next 3 units

Afaik cheap one should be OK, but u need another power supply. Don't power it through ac... T dangerous.

There is no issue in powering a Sonoff from the 5V line from an FTDI adapter, works well. And I can see that you have correctly set the data signals to 3.3V on the FTDI adapter, which is the good thing to do.
Let us know is the correct console port speed fixes the issue.

You are right, I have checked and also the Vcc pin on the Sonoff needs 3.3V, like the voltage of the data lines.
