Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Hi,
I have setup 2 Sonoff basic and 2 Sonoff wall plugs and 3 Sonoff POW all with Espeasy.
I have got the hang of it... I have order 15 more Sonoff basics. I seem to have an issue with the new batch.
I have been using R120 and flash program to write FW.
I do the same steps I have done with all the other devices.
- Solder pins
- Plug in to laptop with button held down
- flasher com6,1024,120
- Plug into power source and AP apears ... configure and good to go.
last step doesn't work... AP doesnt show.
Is there something I am missing? because it worked for 7 previous devices... but this lot doesnt seem to work.
I will try a few more... but I dont want to brick 15 of them.
Thanks in advance.

Connect via serial and post output here
Domoticz on Raspi 2 -- 14 ESP units (hacked Sonoff,NodeMCUs, Wemos, self-built units) running with RC140- Mega 2.0.0 dev8
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
I got exactly same issue with a new batch of Sonoff I just bought. No out in serial as well.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
What are the specs (mem/soc) of the current sonoff basic batch?
And when using the Arduino IDE to compile & upload?
Output of the upload?

Output of the upload?
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
It seems like the new Sonoff Basic are shipped with new chip.
Flashing using the Flash tool was done without error, but the AP will never get discovered.
I have to use the Andruino IDE to compile the latest firmware and flash it with DOUT mode to finally get it working.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Hi is there any fix for this yet? I have two SONOFF units and they worked fine until i flashed them with the same settings as above and now they dont seem to do anything.
If i boot them with the button pressed they still go into upload mode as if i dont press the button the upload tool errors so i know they are not dead. When they boot after the firmware update there is no led activity on the unit and it does not appear as a wifi AP.
Any help would be great.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Hello Forum
i have the same problem.
i flashing 3 Sonoff Wifi Basic with 2.0 dev11 Bin File and after the Sonoff ESP doing nothing.
what i do:
- flashing with ESPTool ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev11_normal_1024.bin --> Flash OK, but after Restart no AP is open
- flashing with ESPTool ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev9_normal_1024.bin --> Flash OK, but after Restart no AP is open
- flashing with ESPTool ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev9_normal_4096.bin --> Flash OK, but after Restart no AP is open
- flashing with ESP Flash Download Tool V2.3 ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev11_normal_1024.bin --> Flash OK, but after Restart no AP is open
- erase mem (http://www.pratikpanda.com/completely-f ... sh-memory/) and Flash ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev9_normal_1024.bin --> all OK, but no AP
also try the test and dev files with same nothing...
i used an CH340 Serial Adapter for programming and a Laboratory power supply for the 3.3V. The ESP does not consume any power. Maybe 1-2 mA. If i pressed the button needs 35 mA.
last week i flashed 2 Sonoff Basic with the same dev11, same Adapter without any problems. They working perfectly.
but now i ordered 5 new Sonoff. 3 of them are with this problems. 2 I have not flashed yet.
the serial Output is:

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Just a reminder, the basic is a 1MB device (as standard, it's possible to resolder it with a 4MB chip) and thus you need to use the "1024" bin file.
Regarding the problem it seems that the latest batch is using a different setup and need to be flashed differently than the official compiled bin. How this is done I have not a step by step guide but you need to compile yourself as of now. We need to document this on the wiki though.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
i read somewhere in the INet should used the DOUT mode for programming.
i do this with the ESP Flash Download Tool V2.3 and now one Sonoff is working !!!!
later i will check the other sonoff's
Edit: other modules now also working after flshing in DOUT mode. it's crazy the radio Button SPI Mode jumps back to QIO Mode after start programming.

It would be good if someone would add this info to the Wiki. I'd do it myself, but I don't believe I have the access to it?

Flash method?
Unfortunately, i'm not telepatic. You need to tell us as much details as possible. For you it's clear, but your environment is unclear to us...
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
I have tried both with the Arduino IDE and ESPtool.exe im pushing the 1024.bin image using a USB - TTL board using the 3.3V pin. If i dont boot the SONOFF with the button pressed then both applications fail to upload so the unit seems to be able to still be programmed.
If i boot the unit with the button pressed i cant telnet to it to run TTL commands which was a test i found so i cant run AT commands serial to the unit so it may be dead im not sure.

Which command did you use in Andruino IDE? And which FTDI chip did you use?seikan wrote: ↑08 Aug 2017, 17:33 It seems like the new Sonoff Basic are shipped with new chip.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Same problems using the flashtool from letscontrolit.
Got this working on my devices (china, last week) : By using the other tool from:
http://espressif.com/en/support/download/other-tools
Download: Flash Download Tools V3.4.9.2 (ESP8266 & ESP32)
http://espressif.com/sites/default/file ... .9.2_0.zip
Download latest ESPEasy 2.0 (dev 11) and unzip from
https://github.com/letscontrolit/ESPEasy/releases
I used: ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev11.zip
https://github.com/letscontrolit/ESPEas ... -dev11.zip
Unzip the "Flash Download Tools" and run ESPFlashDownloadTool_v3.4.9.2.exe
Choose ESP8266 DownloadTool:
Select: ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev11_normal_1024.bin in the tool (pressing ... button)
Type adres after @ 0x00000
Checkbox before the pathname checked.
Settings, CrystalFreq: 26M
SPI SPEED: 26.7 MHz
SPI MODE: DOUT
FLASH SIZE: 8MBit
Select your COM port (in my case COM3)
BAUD: 115200
Hit button Start.
After a while, the proces is finished.
Unplug and Replug the USB UART, de devices reboots (Picture shows Putty output)
Wifi AP SSID: ESP_EASY_0 appears.
Cheers.

Same problem here with brand new Sonoff 4CH ! I can flash it without problem but Wifi sugnal never shows up
I tried also in DIO mode for flash but not much more success !

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Hello vincen,
did you consider that the 4ch Sonoff does not use a ESP-8266? It is an ESP8285, a slightly different processor.
ESPEasy runs on the 4CH sonoff, but you have to compile a version for the other processor.

Completely lost here as I thought it was included by default in 2.0 version so I don't see the point to recompile it to get support for it ! In all matters if it needs to be recompiled I have to give up (never succeeded to follow all steps to setup environnment for thatLisaM wrote: ↑15 Aug 2017, 13:56Yes, but you cannot use the pre-compiled ESP8266 version...
You need to compile it yourself with Arduino IDE using the ESP8285 board.

Use the bin file ending with "8285". This is something that will be changed in the future since it is a bit confusing having the name that way. Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Even the older R1xx versions can be used with Sonoff 4ch, i'm running a R148 on it.
But the standard binaries are compiled for the ESP-8266, not for ESP-8285!
As the two CPUS handle the memory slightly different you must compile a binary suitable for the CPU.
If the source is compiled correctly it runs on both.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Thank you alphons your post works fine and my units are now working again.
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
I had the same issue. I solved it but I am not sure if what I have done to solve it is going to cause me any additional issues if the memory size has not changed.
I solved the issue by flashing the 8285 version of the firmware instead of the 1024 size. I now have 4 working devices using this. I was just assuming that the company has upgraded the memory on the new units.
If this is something that is going to cause me issues I would sure like to know it ASAP.

I think we already have a precompiled ESP8285 version, that should work right?

I have the same problem but i can solve it with your instructions!! Best regards and thanks!
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
I have a few brand new Sonoff Basic devices - the ones with the new chip that required DOUT rather than DIO, apparently, though I am having trouble flashing ESPEasy binary images on these devices with it set to DOUT or DIO.
I have successfully flashed these devices with a blink sketch using the Arduino IDE, so I know my USB-> serial is working ok. I'm pretty sure the Arduino IDE is using DIO though, as '-bm' is not specified on the command line (see example further down this post).
Here is one of my attempts at flashing an ESPEasy binary image, with console out (I'm on a Mac):
$ esptool -vv -bz 1M -bm dout -cd ck -cb 115200 -cp /dev/cu.wchusbserial1410 -ca 0x00000 -cf ESPEasy_v2.0.0-dev12_normal_1024.bin

The above appears to flash ok but the AP never turns up and serial is silent. I have tried the same with the R120 release of ESPEasy and also specifying -bm DIO with no difference in behaviour.

Immediately after uploading this the Sonoff blinks away happily.
As a side note, I HAVE successfully flashed an AdaFruit Huzzah with the R120 binary image specifying -bm DIO, so the image is also fine.... It's just these Sonoffs that I'm struggling with.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Hello all
I have a Sonoff S20 which I've read is almost identical to the Sonoff basic. I'm able to upload espeasy but as with others.. there's no AP. There's a twist to this story though... As I did manage to get it up before..
This is what happend:
Tested the original unit with EWelink - all was ok
Soldered header and used Adruino IDE to flash espEasy R120 - all went well
ESP_0 AP came up and I started to configure the unit....whilst going through the config I thought I could load up a config from another Sonoff Basic I have, then update the parameters like IP address, name etc.. but the config wasn't showing up So i rebooted the unit..... It went downhill from there..i Iost connectivity . I turned off my WiFi ap in the hope of seeing esp_0 on the unit but that didn't happen either. Ive tried to flash espEasy on again.. which seems to go on successfully... But no Esp_0 ap. I get no output over serial nor can I send any commands (using putty)
Flashing Tasimota works fine..
I have a feeling that config data is persistent and that is what's causing the problem. I may need to do some work of memory wipe, and start again.
I anyone out there able to help?

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
- Disconnect the S20
- shorten Tx--Rx with a jumper cable
- power on and wait some seconds
- power off, remove jumper.
This erases the chip memory.

Thanks Shardan
I'll give this a go when I get home. Incidentally...Do you have any idea what kind of response I should get from the on board LEDs when doing this?

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Honestly i don't know.
My S20's are still on the way from china
Hopefully the customs won't reject them.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Just an update.
Shorting tx/Rx didn't work for me.. I had to use the espTool from
Espressif. There is an option to clear the chip which worked. I then used Arduino IDE to load EspEasy on again.
Phew!
Oh and my unit also came from China... Took about 3weeks to deliver to my home in the UK.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Just flashed a new Sonoff S20 (V1.3) with the Arduino IDE and ESPEasy v2.0.0-dev12 and flashmout 'DOUT'. Flashed and ran in first 'go'.
I do still get "Error while reading/writing config.dat in 926" with this new device

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Is there much of a difference between R120 and 147?.....
Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
@alphons
I received the NEW sonoff basic from itead today.
I followed your instruction to flash the Espeasy normal v2.0 with the flashing tools from Espressif per your instruction.
I was successful and reboot the sonoff and on the Wifi ssid, I see ESP_Easy_0, but I cannot logon because it requires an 8 digit password.
Please advise the password.

Re: Sonoff Basic - AP not apearing on first boot with pre-built BIN
Thanks all,
I was able to log onto the sonoff and change ip address of my desire and proceed to configure this for domoticz.
When I reach the "HARDWARE" section, as usual, since I had many sonoff, I change the wifi status led to GPIO 13(D7), as soon as I did that, the led on sonoff goes on and I was disconnected from the router and no longer able to log on. What gives?
