progress ......well !?!

#1 Post by davecason » 28 Nov 2024, 03:10

Hi Folks,

So I am now able to talk to two of my very old Wemos D1 Mini's with a USB-to-Serial cable that works. (who knew huh?)

Here's my question now, on the two old ESP's I logged in to both and made two BACKUP files from within each unit, it was
under TOOLS, and then SETTINGS, and SAVE and it made bin files of course.

Example: config_Dave_Temp_U0_Build20105_202413.dat

I want to restore one of them because I'm locked out now, I tired to move the wireless setting from one network to another and it's
now dead, it can't/won't get a new IP. Also I can't get in to it via the AP mode upon boot because the password is NFG.

Can I take the Easy Flasher and re-flash that Wimos D1 with the original BIN file from a while ago: ESP_Easy_mega-20200328_normal_ESP8266_4M1M.bin

To get it going again and then restore the above.dat from the TOOL's / Settings / Load menu again?

THEN if I can get back in to it after that:
- what's the preferred and safe way to move the ESP from one wireless network to another
- and is there anyway to change the AP password its looking for upon boot - configesp and the others I've tried don't work.

Cheers'

Hi Again,

Well I have tried to re-flash this Wemos D1 Mini about 17 times on 4 different PC from Windows 7 to 10 and had zero friggen joy !!!
It's now 10:17 and I started this fun at 4:00 I've tried: 20200328 and even 20181108 and got nowhere .....

Pretty much every time I run ESP Easy Flasher (0.04.007) I get the error :

Start flashing on COM 5 (approx) 99 seconds)
Flashing done (xyz.xs)
Adding settings using SERIAL commands.
COM port already in use. Cannot proceed.
(You may disconnect the unit if you want.)
DONE!

No it bloody isn't ..... (grin) ..... so I got the cable problem solved and now I can see the modules.
As for my other question about re-flashing - the above is where I'm at ......

Every PC and yes all 4 say the same COM PORT IN USE ERROR and I've also tried every iteration out there of jumpering D3 to GND.
I have buddy who has a few more brand new ones that I"m gonna go pick up and try from scratch on SAT - any other suggestions are MORE than welcome!!!

Cheers'

Well damm,

I opened a old version of ESPEasy_mega-20180324 - tried that and it worked !!
Got in to the ESP and finished the setup and gave a WIfi spot and logged in to the console.

Quit it and then tried the next version 20200328 and now its dead again ! (grin) Oh well ......

Sounds like there might be some RF calibration data left in an area on the flash which isn't cleared when flashing a new version.
For this reason we do have 'blank' bin files (different sizes)
So first blank the entire flash and then flash a newer build.

Also why don't you try the web flasher? This makes it also quite easy to configure wifi.

Please note there are some boards out there (I've seen some ESP8266 on a black PCB which show this behavior) which do have a badly tuned WiFi antenna. For some reason only really old builds work on those boards.
Newer builds are not able to tune the antenna to work stable.
Only when you keep your thumb pressed on the antenna (which can also feel warm) you can get a somewhat stable WiFi on those boards.
