$5 WiFi Dev Board Running Linux

#1 Post by jmycroft » 02 Aug 2016, 06:25

This new dev board on Kickstarter looks interesting. Very good price for a board that has WiFi and can run Linux. They claim to be Arduino-Campatible, but what they have is actually another board with its own ATMega chip, so i guess it isn't? Perhaps can be a hub for ESP based projects. Curious to see what you guys think.

It's a nice board and it's price can really make a difference as opposed to the original Omega (From $19 down to only $5!). But any board to power it through USB, will cost you an additional $15... Can someone explain why the really simple mini dock is three times the price compared to the much more complex Omega itself?
Would have been nice if the non-plus version had a micro USB fitted for easy powering. I can imagine that the plus version has no spare space because of the sd card slot.

With build-in WiFi it's more convenient than the Pi Zero. But keep in mind that it can only run a very scaled down version of Linux with 16MB Flash and 64MB RAM.
(huge difference compared to Pi Zero)

And you're right that is doesn't run native "Arduino sketches".

But what would you like to do with it?

I think the board is designed to be embedded into things and maybe even commercial products. So it makes sens to not include any of the power-supply stuff (it comes with the product itself). But yeah, i think that's their strategy, selling the Omega2 with no profit or even at a loss and make profit primarily from the docks.

i found this post and looked it up on kickstarter.

it runs an openwrt-linux-variant.
so you may install (micro)-python from the repository on it.

could make the same thinks you can do with the esp8266/esp32 in another fashion

dont want to enter this thread, but if the discussion is going to alternatives for the esp-thing,
i always (maybe like many other) look for them. mostly if they make life more than more easier. :?

but none reach the "real" price-level of the esp-chips. and the comparison is always like "apple with peas"

if you consider the over-all cost of alternatives, there are some here:
http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/03/16/ ... tribution/
"while the official prices for Raspberry Pi ($5), Orange Pi One ($9.99), and C.H.I.P ($9) are a little different, I ended up paying about the same for all three boards once shipping is included: £9.04 (or about $12.77) for Raspberry Pi Zero, $13.38 for Orange Pi One, and $14.22 for C.H.I.P (Cyber Monday deal for “$8”).
and you may can get the h3-boards dwon to 400mW consumption (here):
http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/topi ... nsumption/

and esp-power-consumption: http://bbs.espressif.com/viewtopic.php?t=133

but all this is maybe another story...

How can one have experience with a board that does not exist yet in the real world?
I would say, espeasy is the winner.. it is available NOW.

Your post sounds more like an advertisement for the kickstarter. Maybe it is just another kickstarter project that never gets delivered/finalized..?
