Why does RFLink use the hardware serial ports instead of standard digital IO ports?
This way they cannot be used for other devices with a serial interface.

That does not answer my question why the hardware serial ports were chosen.
I'm interested if there is any technical reason for that.

Re: Why does RFLink use serial ports instead of standard digital IO ports
For various reasons.. like.. because we wanted to keep an option on the use of interrupts and because we could.. and because we might use the digital ports for some things.. and some other reasons..
But why does that matter? It is not like we are short on ports.
What other device with a serial interface do you have in mind?

Thanks.
For instance, a LoRaWAN RN2483 module to send out notifications over The Things Network.
While that does not have to be an option for the RFLink Gateway (it could be connected separately to the Pi) but it might be a nice future option.
