Programming the memory chip directly (without the ESP8266)?

#1 Post by jbaumann » 09 Aug 2016, 10:14

Hi,

is there a way to directly flash the memory on the ESP-boards without having to use the ESP?

Background to this question: I got some of the cheap LED bulbs which contain a ESP8266. And to connect wires to the memory seems to be much easier than to try and solder wires to TX, RX and GPIO0. So, if there is a simple way to do this, in the best case simply using an FTDI adapter, then this could be an elegant way to reprogram these bulbs.

Regards, Joachim

Yes, it looks a bit like that one. There are loads of them on Ali-Express...

I have removed the memory chip from an ESP-01 and replaced it with a testing clip (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1pcs-pr ... 24051.html).

I am currently able to program other ESP-01, but still no luck with the bulb. I think I cannot get the clip to correctly connect to the memory chip's pins. Another cunning plan gone wrong...

Next step will be to program memory chips directly using this testing clip and the soldering them in place. Easier, I hope, than to solder the connection needed to program the chip in the bulb directly (I do not have the steady hand needed to solder pins of the ESP8266 directly).
