Variable speed DC motor

Just starting a new project - a water feature which besides many things needs a low current variable water pump controllable by a ESP.

I've chosen the Wemos D1 Mini for this project, and a 12V DC motor.

Has anyone experience in controlling the speed of DC motors through ESP Easy? I'm awaiting the arrival of a D1 Mini Motor Driver Shield as I've read that this will work and is included as a device within the latest Mega release.

Any advice, comments or suggestions?
